About Us
We are a military family that was stationed in Mediocre, Alaska!

Mediocre, Alaska is about attitude.  It's about turning lemons into clam chowder and getting the perfect picture of the tree, right where the bull moose was standing.  Mediocre, Alaska is about the last three years and how a "shot in the dark" assignment became an experience unequaled in my life to date.  Mediocre, Alaska is mostly about the people and our Faith in Christ, who put us here, in accordance with His Purpose - the fruits of which we may never see, but rest in knowing that they will ripen some day to be harvested.

We've moved on to a new assignment, in a new town, with new neighbors, and new fields to be sewn.  As we embark on this journey, we invite you to share with us in our trip - which is sure to be at least a mediocre one!  We'll make every attempt to keep our page updated and share as many photos as we can.  Please don't get angry if updates aren't made everyday at midnight CDT.  If you really need a fresh experience every night - I encourage you to visit woot! - there's always some fun to be had there.

Why "Mediocre, Alaska?"

Mediocre, Alaska is the title of a book not yet published that will chronicle our family's experiences during the three years we were stationed in Alaska.  The underlying theme is that attitude is everything, and that any experience, regardless of how remote, unplanned or failed can still be extraordinary, even though it only ranked as "mediocre" in the minds of other folks.  Basically, I did everything I could to experience Alaska to the fullest - a postcard-esque experience, and in the end, my Alaska experience would probably be rated as "mediocre" at best.  Though even in it's "mediocrity", Alaska proved to be full of wonders that surpassed any I had witnessed anywhere else.

Ultimately, I got to thinking that really anyplace could prove to be extraordinary - even places that don't stand out as prominent as Alaska.  Take Alabama for example. . . In the last year of being stationed here we've seen things that we would never have seen, had we avoided the state altogether.  Flea markets and antique malls blow my mind away!  The rolling hills around Lake Martin are gentle yet subtly exciting to drive.  The south offers so many things that can't be found anywhere else - and Alabama is at the heart of it all.  So, taking this epiphany with me, I've decided to find the grandeur and excitement in even the most "mediocre" experiences.  That is my quest.  That is what this is all about.

What's the goal?

Well, I don't know that there really is one - right now.  Sure, I'd love to get published and be able to put my kids through college, upgrade my wife's engagement diamond and buy a 2007 Honda Odyssey Touring Edition with cash, but I'm not counting on making those things happen through this "mediocrity".  Who knows what's at the end road?  I do know that we hope to use this site to continually keep our friends and family informed as to how we are doing.  We've already met that goal to some extent, but it is a continual process.
